How Is A Brain Injury Classified?

Severe Brain Injury

◊ Severe brain injury commonly includes a loss of consciousness (greater than one week) It commonly appears on imaging studies.Findings may show contusions or bleeding that may manifest into herniations of brain tissue or shifts in location of one or more portions of the brain.

Severe brain injury may be classified as:

  • Persistent vegetative state
  • Severe disability
  • Moderate disability
  • Good recovery

Moderate Brain Injury

Moderate brain injury commonly includes a loss of consciousness (30 minutes to one week) Positive findings such as contusions or bleeding in brain on CT or MRI or other imaging studies.

Mild Brain Injury

and the symptom(s) cannot be completely accounted for by other causes.
