Types of Skull Fractures - An Overview

Skull fracture: break in the bone that surrounds the brain

  • Basilar skull fracture: Is a fracture to bones that make up the floor of the skull. Basilar skull fractures are usually caused by a severe head trauma of force to the head.
  • Depressed skull fractures : May occur from a forceful impact by a blunt object that causes “dents” in the skull bone. Depressed skull fractures that are between 1/4-1/2 inch (a skull’s thickness) will often require surgery to elevate the bone and check the brain for possible damage from the force.
Depressed skull fractures can cause bruising of the tissue, called a contusion . A contusion can also occur in response to shaking of the brain within the confines of the skull. Damage to a major blood vessel within the head can cause a hematoma , or heavy bleeding into or around the brain.
  • Subdural hematoma : Bleeding between the brain tissue and dura mater (a layer of tissue between the brain and skull) is called a subdural hematoma.
  • An epidural hematoma may often occur with trauma to the temporal bone located on the side of the head above the ear.
  • Intraparenchymal- hemorrhage/cerebral contusion : Is bleeding into the brain tissue itself.
Closed head injuries : Is an injury to the brain or structures within the skull that is NOT caused by a penetrating injury (e.g. stab wound).
